E-invoicing will become the new normal for B2G transactions in 2026

  • Mandatory eInvoicing for Government Agencies: By January 1, 2026, New Zealand government agencies that issue or receive over 2,000 domestic trade invoices annually must have eInvoicing capabilities, ensuring more efficient digital transactions via the Peppol network.
  • Payment Timeline Improvements: From January 1, 2025, government agencies must pay 95% of domestic trade e-invoices within 5 business days and all other invoices within 10 business days, enhancing cash flow for businesses engaging with the government.
  • Consultation on Supplier eInvoicing Mandate: The government plans to consult businesses about a rule requiring certain suppliers to submit e-invoices, with findings to be reported to the Cabinet in February 2025, potentially standardizing eInvoicing practices further.
