Sales and Use Taxes in Louisiana were first introduced in 1938, following the financial pressures of the Great Depression. Similar to other states at the time, Louisiana adopted the sales tax as a means to raise state revenue in a period of economic distress. Initially, the tax was limited to tangible personal property, but as the state economy grew, the scope of taxable items expanded.
