European Commission wants to hit Chinese webshops with import duties

  • The European Commission is considering imposing import duties on all parcels from outside the EU, targeting Chinese webshops such as Temu, Shein, and AliExpress.
  • Currently, goods under 150 euros from outside the EU are exempt from import duties, but a new proposal aims to remove this threshold, making small orders from China more expensive.
  • The Commission may face challenges in reaching agreement with all member states.
  • Chinese webshops have gained ground in the European market, partly due to competitive pricing and Chinese subsidies for postal services.
  • While the measure would affect all parcels from outside the EU, it would have less impact on American companies like Amazon, through which European consumers mainly purchase products from EU sellers.
