Mandatory Electronic Invoicing in Zambia

Starting July 1, 2024, Zambia will require businesses to use the Smart Invoice electronic billing system introduced by the ZRA, replacing the current Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFD). Smart Invoice will transmit invoice and inventory data to the tax authorities, covering additional taxes and levies such as VAT, Sales Tax, Rental Income, IPL, Tourist Tax, and Local Electricity Consumption Tax. Taxpayers must register for Smart Invoice, obtain validation from the ZRA, and download the Virtual Sales Data Controller (VSCD) module to facilitate data transmission. The VSCD will connect business ERP systems with the ZRA’s billing systems, and electronic documents will be validated by the ZRA using a unique identifier code (Mark ID) and a QR code.
