E-Invoicing in Australia

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has been promoting the Peppol network to encourage public entities to move to electronic invoicing. Many public administrations accept e-invoices in Peppol BIS 3.0 format, with plans to upgrade to PINT (Peppol INTernational) A-NZ by 2025. B2G transactions are also allowed in other formats such as paper-based, PDF with e-signature, or EDI. Invoices must be archived for 5 years.

For B2B transactions, domestic invoices between private companies are allowed in mutually agreed formats, including paper, PDF, EDIFACT, and XML. The ATO aims to encourage businesses to move to e-invoicing via the Peppol network in BIS 3.0 format, with plans to upgrade to PINT A-NZ format in 2024 & 2025. The ATO is also working on the Business E-Invoicing Right (BER) initiative to accelerate e-invoicing adoption, but it has not been formally approved by the Australian government. Invoices for B2B transactions must be archived for 5 years.
