Major rejig of Customs duty, GST being planned

The government has identified several products with an inverted duty structure, such as washing machines, air purifiers, solar glass, paper, furniture, apparel, and jewelry. This structure makes imports of finished products cheaper than raw materials and creates obstacles for local manufacturing. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has shared the list of products with the Finance Ministry to address this issue. For example, in the paper industry, the import duty on raw pulp is higher than on finished products, leading to increased imports of finished paper. A similar situation exists for washing machines and air purifiers.
