Clarifications regarding the e-Invoicing system in Germany: ZUGFeRD

  • ZUGFeRD is an electronic invoice data exchange format created by the Electronic Invoice Forum Germany (FeRD) with the support of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
  • It is based on Directive 2014/55/EU and can be used in B2B, B2G, and B2C scenarios. The latest update focuses on EDI procedures and provides clarity on the timelines for optional and mandatory e-Invoicing in Germany.
  • There are concerns about the compatibility of ZUGFeRD with the European Union’s ViDA proposal, which aims to redefine invoices as structured electronic data.
  • E-Invoicing in Germany will start voluntarily in 2025 and become mandatory in 2026.
  • The tax authorities consider ZUGFeRD, especially version 2.0.1, a structured electronic invoice that adheres to the European standard for electronic invoicing.
