VAT reduction for catering, also for alcohol till end of Sept 2021

A new temporary VAT reduction will be introduced to support the cafés and restaurants. Until the end of September, only 6 percent VAT must be charged on both meals and drinks.

If the corona figures allow it, the cafes and restaurants will be able to receive customers on their terraces again from 8 May. The full restart of the catering industry is planned for June. To support café owners and restaurateurs, the federal government gave the green light on Wednesday morning for a temporary VAT reduction.

The catering industry normally has to charge 12 percent VAT for meals, 21 percent for drinks. From the cafes and restaurants open again until the end of September, this will temporarily be 6 percent. It should encourage customers to spend more money during a visit to a café or restaurant.
