- New CBAM Declarant Status Platform: Starting in early April 2025, operators can apply for authorized CBAM declarant status through a dedicated IT platform, which is crucial for importing products under the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
- Exemptions for Small Importers: The European Commission has proposed simplifying CBAM obligations by exempting operators with cumulative imports under 50 tonnes per year in sectors like steel and cement, although this does not apply to indirect customs representation or for electricity and hydrogen imports.
- Application Prioritization and Future Simplifications: The DGEC will prioritize CBAM declarant status applications based on import volumes, with stricter criteria for those importing less than 10 tons. Additionally, from 2026, companies using default CO2 emission values won’t need accredited verifiers for their annual declarations, pending final adoption of these measures by European institutions.
