Expansion of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Goods

  • Expansion of Tariffs: The Trump administration has significantly expanded section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum, increasing the tariff rate on aluminum from 10% to 25%, maintaining the 25% rate on steel, and eliminating all prior country exemptions and importer exclusions. This expansion includes new derivative products affecting various industries such as automotive, aviation, construction, consumer, industrial, and technology.
  • Specific Goods Affected: The new tariffs will cover a wide range of goods under various Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the US (HTSUS) subheadings. Examples include parts of umbrellas, doors, windows, kitchen containers, parts of air conditioners, telecommunication apparatus, bumpers, airplane parts, furniture, sporting equipment, bulldozer blades, and modular building units.
  • Implementation and Exceptions: While many new and previously impacted articles will attract the additional 25% tariff effective March 12, 2025, the effective date for some new derivative articles is deferred until the federal government has the necessary systems in place. Additionally, the existing 200% tariff on Russian aluminum articles is maintained and extended to newly identified HTSUS subheadings.
