The GST Council has taken the first step towards providing tax refunds to foreign tourists who purchase goods in India to take back home, a facility available in several countries. The proposal to introduce B2C e-invoicing, currently on a voluntary basis, will help in the process, enabling customs authorities to verify that the goods were bought in India and eligible for a refund, while also reducing tax evasion. The main objective is to help consumers verify invoices, ushering in transparency and checking evasion.
