After 7-year wait, GST Appellate Tribunal may finally be operational soon

The appointment of the first president of the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) was commended by legal experts, but they also emphasized the need for the government to expedite the appointment of judicial and technical members to make the tribunal operational. On May 6, Justice (retd) Sanjaya Kumar Mishra was appointed as the president of GSTAT. However, the tribunal still needs other members to start its judicial functions. The tribunal requires both judicial and technical members for its benches, and there are currently a total of 14,227 pending GST appeals. The process of appointing these members may take a few months, and it is essential for the tribunal to be fully functional across all locations in India. GSTAT was formed nearly seven years after the law was passed by Parliament in 2017 due to administrative reasons.
