Bulgaria is preparing to implement the SAF-T (Standard Audit File for Tax) framework, an OECD-backed standard for exchanging tax-related information between taxpayers and authorities. The Bulgarian National Revenue Agency has made the first version of the SAF-T Bulgaria XSD schema available on its website. The move aims to simplify tax audits and reduce manual compliance work for taxpayers. The SAF-T Bulgaria regime will initially be voluntary for both resident and non-resident taxpayers, with plans for a potential launch in 2025. The reporting will cover various transaction types on a monthly or annual basis, depending on the category. The phased implementation will start with pilot testing, followed by mandatory adoption for large, medium, small, and micro taxpayers over a period of five years. Bulgaria joins other European countries that have already implemented SAF-T. Further details on the implementation timeline and formats will be announced later in 2024.
