The European Parliament has proposed a one-year postponement of the measures in the proposed directive ‘VAT in the Digital Age’ (ViDA). This will allow companies more time to prepare. The Parliament also suggests changes to the obligations of online platforms, particularly those involved in short-term accommodation. The European Commission published the ViDA directive proposal at the end of 2022, which includes a harmonized digital reporting system, updated VAT treatment for the platform economy, and a single VAT registration within the EU. Additionally, the Parliament proposes a one-year postponement of the amendment of the regulation on administrative cooperation and the fight against VAT fraud. They call for better cooperation between organizations involved in combating VAT fraud and improvements to the VAT Information Exchange System (VIES). Lastly, the Parliament has approved the proposed directive on VAT rules for distance sales of imported goods from third territories or countries.
