Amazon, a global e-commerce giant, is conducting a thorough VAT compliance audit of its European registered users. This is part of their regular efforts to reduce inaccurate information on their marketplace. The EU e-commerce regulations, which came into effect on July 1, 2021, have introduced new responsibilities for digital platform operators. The regulations classify the digital marketplace as a “deemed supplier” and hold the platform operator responsible for tax compliance. Amazon has launched an investigation into its European marketplaces to verify the validity of tax information submitted by registered users. As a result, thousands of accounts have been temporarily blocked, including some that have been operating legally and compliantly for many years. Amazon is working to resolve the issue, but it may take time due to technological discrepancies.
