According to statistical records from the highest tax authorities of the German states, special VAT audits conducted in 2022 resulted in an additional revenue of approximately 1.53 billion euros. These results do not include the outcomes from special VAT auditors participating in general tax audits or tax investigation audits.Special VAT audits are conducted independently of regular tax audits and without regard to the size of businesses. In 2022, a total of 64,250 special VAT audits were carried out, with an average of 1,673 special VAT auditors employed throughout the year.On average, each auditor conducted 38 special audits. This translates to an average additional revenue of around 0.91 million euros per auditor.
