Sea music
Should you’re planning your holidays in Europe, you may want to consider Croatia. Besides the nice weather, friendly people and interesting food, there’s also lots of beautiful views to be seen and places to be visited. One of them is at the Zadar peninsula: the sea organ.
A place where the sea makes music: HERE.
A bit closer to (our) home, are the Dutch dunes, who are protecting the Netherlands from the sea. As you may know, the Netherlands is almost fully below sea-level, so without our dunes, the largest part of our country would not exist. Unless we would be able to create a type of underwater world, such as Bikini Bottom where SpongeBob lives.
Perhaps that’s the reason why so many Dutch people always want to go far away on vacation. Despite the fact that there’s so much interesting things to see and do much closer to home. Just one important tip: don’t go to Amsterdam!
It’s not that I don’t like Amsterdam – in fact I spent a lot of time there during my study and for work – but the city has changed a lot. You may have heard of the word “gezellig”, which more or less means ‘cosy’. That’s what Amsterdam used to be. Nowadays, it’s overwhelmed with tourists and ice cream shops selling Nutella. And as a tourist you may appreciate the fact that in all restaurants everyone speaks English, but for Dutch people it’s annoying. Oh, and everything is heavily overpriced.
Other parts of the Netherlands are much nicer. Dutch people pretend to have a lot of cultural things, and those are probably hidden in the museums that we have. But it’s much nicer to go outside on your bike and go through the flat, windy and somewhat boring countryside. And don’t forget the dunes of course.
There are probably (even) nicer places to visit. You can try Belgium. Or the number 1 vacation country in Europe: France! At least there they have real castles, croissants and of course wine.
Just make sure you check our website every day. And if you’re in the Netherlands, let us know and we can perhaps meet-up. For a bike-ride, or just a beer.
