Electronic invoicing (E-invoicing) is becoming increasingly popular in Guatemala. Here’s a brief overview of how it works in the country:
- Registration: To use E-invoicing in Guatemala, businesses must register with the Superintendence of Tax Administration (SAT) and obtain an electronic signature certificate. This certificate serves as a digital signature and ensures the authenticity of the electronic documents.
- Invoice Generation: Once registered, businesses can generate E-invoices using their accounting or billing software, or by using a service provider that offers E-invoicing solutions. The generated invoice must comply with the SAT’s requirements, including specific data elements and formats.
- Electronic submission: The generated invoice is submitted electronically to the SAT through the Guatemalan Electronic Invoicing System (FACE), which is the country’s official platform for E-invoicing. The SAT verifies the invoice’s authenticity and issues an electronic receipt, which is sent back to the issuer.
- Validation and Storage: The E-invoice and the electronic receipt must be stored electronically for at least five years in compliance with SAT regulations.
- Payment: Once the invoice has been issued and verified, the customer can make the payment through traditional means or electronic payment methods, including credit/debit cards, bank transfers, and digital wallets.
E-invoicing is mandatory for certain businesses in Guatemala, including those in the telecommunications, energy, and banking industries. However, it is also available for voluntary adoption by other businesses. E-invoicing helps businesses reduce costs, streamline their billing processes, and improve tax compliance.
