The plastic packaging taxes landscape in Europe has changed significantly. The first mover was the UK who introduced a Plastic Packaging Tax as of 1 April 2022, and Spain and Italy are introducing a new tax per 1 January 2023. Also, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes need to be revisited by the end of 2024, driving legislative measures in other countries such as Belgium, Germany and Poland. With an unharmonized landscape across Europe, businesses are required to stay up to date on all new developments and to be cognizant of the different rules in various EU Member States.
