The Bulgarian parliament is considering a draft bill submitted on 26 August 2021 that would temporarily extend the scope of the reduced 9% VAT rate to fruits and vegetables that are currently subject to the standard 20% VAT rate. The draft bill also provides for an increase in the VAT registration threshold from BGN 50,000 to BGN 165,000. As drafted, the measures are to apply from 1 January 2022, although the reduced VAT rate for fruits and vegetables would end after 31 December 2023.
