Since 1971, the European Commission has been granting trade preferences to developing countries within the scope of the Generalised Scheme of Preferences.
The Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) allows developing country exporters to pay less or no duties on their exports to the EU. As from January 1, 2014, this preference was no longer allowed to 87 out of 176 countries, because they did not belong to the GSP anymore.
As from January 1, 2016, 11 of the 89 remaining countries have been removed from the GSP list.
